New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper, who had an NFL-high-tying nine interceptions this past season, wants to return to the Super Bowl champions. However, the fact that they are allowing him to test free agency -- he was notified Monday that they wouldn't retain him with a franchise tag -- tells Sharper that the Saints are prepared to move on without him.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Devery Henderson will be honored this Saturday, March 13, with a parade and other special events in his hometown of Opelousas.
The parade will begin at Holy Ghost Catholic Church at 2 p.m., travel through the downtown area and end at Donald Gardner Stadium.
Eva Noel, an administrator with Mayor's office, said the parade will work in collaboration with area schools, featuring marching bands, dance troops and other student groups that will make up the heart of the celebration
"It is going to be something special. A lot of schools want to participate," Noel said.
"We want this to be oriented towards the children. He is a very polite and pleasant young man. To be in his presence will mean a lot to these children," Noel said. "He is a very positive role model for our young men and women."
Once the parade is over, Noel said Henderson will be given the keys to the city by Mayor Donald Cravins Sr. as well a street sign in recognition of the city's decision to rename Jefferson Street in his honor.
Henderson has also agreed to stay around for an autograph session at the stadium.
Born in 1982, Devery Vaughn Henderson Jr. grew up in Opelousas and many of his family members, including his mother and grandmother, still live in town.
Henderson played his high school ball for Opelousas High, where he rushed for 1,322 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior.
From OHS, he moved on to play college ball for LSU, where he led the Southeastern Conference in 2003 with 11 touchdown receptions. His 19 career touchdowns still rank him as second in the school's history.
The following year, Henderson was drafted by the Saints, for whom he made seven catches for 63 yards during the club’s Super Bowl win over the Indianapolis Colts. The 5-11, 200 pound speedster has played in 76 career regular season games for the Saints, making 43 starts, and has recorded 157 career receptions for 3,094 yards for a 19.7 career receiving average and 16 touchdowns, as well as taking 13 handoffs for 89 yards for a 6.8 average and a touchdown).
In postseason play, Henderson has started four-of-the-five contests he has appeared in and caught 15 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Tom Benson, owner of Super Bowl XLIV championship team the New Orleans Saints, is the 2010 recipient of the Integritas Vitae Award, Loyola University New Orleans’ highest honor.
The Integritas Vitae Award is presented by Loyola’s board of trustees to an individual who exemplifies the qualities Loyola seeks to instill in its students. The recipient is chosen for displaying high moral character and selfless service, without expectation of material reward or public recognition, and adhering to the principles of honesty, integrity, justice and the preservation of human dignity. Benson will be honored at Loyola’s Benefactors’ Dinner on March 11 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans.
The Saints entered their 25th season under Tom Benson’s ownership in 2009, a season that culminated with the team winning its first NFC and Super Bowl championships in the franchise’s history. Benson has been the driving force behind campaigns to secure Super Bowls for New Orleans, and during his tenure, the city hosted four Super Bowls and recently landed Super Bowl XLVII, to be played in 2013.
Benson stepped forward recently with a new partnership that will sustain the club’s commitment to the state of Louisiana through 2025 and also created a vision that will bring a Sports Development District to the city. As part of the agreement with the state, Benson and his family will purchase and redevelop the New Orleans Centre, a mall adjacent to the Superdome that has been vacant and in disrepair since 2005, and the Dominion Tower, an office building near the stadium that has also been unused since Hurricane Katrina. It has now since been renamed Benson Tower.
In 2008, Benson purchased local Fox affiliate WVUE-TV, making it the only wholly locally-owned network-affiliated television station in the New Orleans market. That same year, Benson was selected by the Volunteers of America as the winner of its annual Good Samaritan Award in Philanthropy in recognition of his work in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. His personal leadership in philanthropy has been mirrored in his sports organization. The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame has twice recognized the Saints organization as one of the five most charitable professional organizations.
Benson, who received an honorary degree from Loyola in 1987, has also been a long-time supporter of the university. In 1999, his generous gift to Loyola University funded the first phase of construction of the Gregory R. Choppin Chemistry Wing in Monroe Hall. Choppin and Benson met as classmates at Loyola and have remained friends. Choppin has enjoyed a fascinating career as a chemist, particularly during the peak of the Cold War. In 1955, Choppin and three other chemists discovered chemical element 101, which they named Mendelevium in honor of Dmitri Mendelev, the creator of the periodic table of the elements. The wing was completed in fall 2008.
Benson also made a considerable contribution to Loyola University to create the Jesuit Social Research Institute. The JSRI, a collaboration of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus and Loyola University, was established in 2007 to promote research, social analysis, theological reflection and practical strategies for improving the social and economic conditions in the southern United States and in select parts of the Caribbean and Latin America with a particular focus on issues of race, poverty and migration.
In 1945, Benson served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota and has remained particularly close to this branch of the armed forces. He is the only enlisted man to serve on the board of trustees of the Pensacola Naval Museum and has been honored with an award from the crew of the submarine U.S.S. Louisiana. In 2007, Benson was honored by the U.S. Navy Memorial with the Lone Sailor Award, presented to those who exemplify the core values of honor, courage and commitment.
Benson was a leading advocate for the National World War II Memorial in Washington D.C., and a major contributor and past director of The National World War II Museum in New Orleans, where his pledges helped fund the Pacific Exhibit grand opening and the Midway Theater.

FREE AGENCY SIGNING PERIOD BEGINS; 531 PLAYERS BECOME FREE AGENTS
The National Football League today announced that 531 players are free agents who now can negotiate with all 32 clubs.
Six players this year were designated by their clubs as “franchise" players. A franchise player is a special category for restricted and unrestricted free agents. The deadline for making these designations for 2010 was February 25.
There are two types of franchise players. Clubs retain exclusive negotiating rights to an “exclusive” franchise player by committing to a minimum offer of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of April 15, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, or the average of the top five salaries at his position as of the end of last season – whichever of the three is greater. Other clubs cannot negotiate with exclusive franchise players. Defensive end RICHARD SEYMOUR of the Oakland Raiders was the only player this year that was designated by his club as an exclusive franchise player.
The second type of franchise player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. This “non-exclusive” franchise player may negotiate with other clubs. His original club may match and retain the player, or receive two first-round draft choices as compensation if it decides not to match a new club’s offer.

** exclusive franchise player
Each club is permitted one franchise designation in any year of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. A franchise player may sign a multiyear contract with his current club until July 22. After July 22, any contract signed by a franchise player can only be for one year. If he does not sign by November 16, he must sit out the season.
A club may designate a transition player in lieu of a franchise player in any year when the franchise designation is available. In the 2010 uncapped year, a club may also designate one additional transition player. A transition player must be offered a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of the prior season at the player’s position or 120 percent of the player’s prior year’s salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no draft pick compensation from that club. There are no transition player designations this year.
A club may withdraw a franchise or transition designation and the player then automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent either immediately or when his contract expires. The club cannot name a new franchise or transition player that year.
Unrestricted veteran free agents in the 2010 Final (uncapped) League Year are players who have completed six or more accrued seasons whose contracts have expired. They are free to sign with any club, with no compensation owed to their old club, through July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). At that point, their rights revert to their old club if it made a "tender" offer (110 percent of last year's salary) to the player by June 1. Their old club then has until the Tuesday after the 10th week of the season (November 16) to sign the player. If the player does not sign by November 16, he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by June 1, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season.
Restricted free agents in the 2010 Final (uncapped) League Year are players who have completed three, four or five accrued seasons and whose contracts have expired. They have received qualifying offers from their old clubs and are free to negotiate with any club until April 15, at which time their rights revert to their original club. If a player accepts an offer from a new club, the old club will have the right to match the offer and retain the player. If the old club elects not to match the offer, it can possibly receive draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer. If an offer sheet is not executed, and the player receives the June 1 tender from his old club, the player’s rights revert exclusively to his old club on June 1.
The signing period for unrestricted free agents began today (March 5) and concludes on July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). The signing period for restricted free agents also began today but concludes on April 15.
The following Saints players are restricted free agents who received qualifying offers from their old clubs and are subject to the first refusal/compensation system of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. The old club has a right of first refusal to all players listed below. Compensation is as listed in the column on the right. If the old club has only a right of first refusal but is not entitled to any compensation, the designation "ROFR" appears in the column. In order to submit an offer sheet, a new club must have available the required choice or choices, defined as its own or better choices in the applicable rounds, in the 2010 NFL Draft. Offer sheets may be submitted to an old club by no later than 11:59:59 p.m., New York time, on Friday, April 15.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
The following Saints players are unrestricted free agents with six or more accrued seasons. Subject to the CBA’s “Final Eight Plan” rules, the players in this category may be signed by any club in the league until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first training camp, whichever is later), with no rights of any character held by the old club.
