Coach Gary Kubiak started his intense scrutiny of himself and his staff on Monday. By two days after the end of the season, he decided to make changes by firing defensive coordinator Richard Smith, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and defensive line coach Jethro Franklin. The Texans finished 22nd in defense this season, including 23rd against the run and 17th against the pass. They also were 27th in points allowed.

--When second-year CB Fred Bennett cleaned out his locker, he made it clear he was ready to move on to Year 3. Bennett struggled to find consistency throughout the 2008 season. There were hopes that he would enter this year as a starter, but he struggled to have the same consistency that he had over the second half of his rookie season. He moved in and out of the starting lineup, until eventually being replaced by Dunta Robinson in the final six weeks.

The Texans made major moves Tuesday, announcing the firing of defensive coordinator Richard Smith, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin and defensive backs coach Jon Hoke. The Texans are just beginning a search that will include an interview with current assistant Frank Bush for the defensive coordinator position. The team will try to hire a defensive coordinator before filling the other two positions. Player-wise, the Texans do not have a lot of big-time players heading into free agency.

When the NFL's free agency period begins on Feb. 27, 18 Texans are scheduled to hit the market – six as restricted free agents and 12 as unrestricted – unless they sign with the Texans before that date. Two of the biggest names in the Texans' potential free agent pool are tight end Owen Daniels (restricted) and cornerback Dunta Robinson (unrestricted).

The Texans have dismissed defensive coordinator Richard Smith, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and defensive line coach Jethro Franklin. Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced the decision on Tuesday after conferring with Texans owner Bob McNair, vice chairman Cal McNair and general manager Rick Smith since Monday evening.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak spent the day meeting with players as they checked out of the locker room before going on vacation. Kubiak spoke to the media about key personnel decisions facing the team in the coming months.

Less than 24 hours after their win over Chicago, the Texans returned to Reliant Stadium to meet with coaches and clean out their lockers. The routine was the same for most players, but there was a different feeling inside the locker room.

The Texans finished 22nd in defense this season, including 23rd against the run and 17th against the pass. They also were 27th in points allowed. Their struggles in the first half of the season were a major reason for the team not being in playoff contention down the stretch.

Linebacker DeMeco Ryans said he was glad his position coach, Johnny Holland, will be remaining with the team, but he added it's tough to see the others he had respect for, like Smith, leave.

Dissatisfied with the slow development of a defense that features three first-round picks on the line and four first-rounders overall, Texans coach Gary Kubiak fired coordinator Richard Smith and two other defensive assistants Tuesday. The dismissals of Smith, secondary coach Jon Hoke and defensive line coach Jethro Franklin came after Houston finished 8-8 for the second straight year.

NFL teams searching for coaches saw a big name stunningly burst onto their radar screens. The Denver Broncos fired Mike Shanahan, the league's second-longest tenured coach, on Tuesday after 14 seasons that included Super Bowl titles in 1998 and '99. But the Broncos blew a three-game lead in their division with three games to go this season to miss the playoffs.
